ŁEBA AND SURROUNDINGS

Łeba is the beautiful town, full of a charm. Historically it is a piscatorial colony, about which the first mentions are dated in 13th century. Already in the year of 1357 the civic rights were given to Łeba. In l6th century, after grand floods and hurricanes, the citizens abandoned old Łeba and moved on the other side of the river. For a long time this area had been lived in by Słowińscy an ethnic group of Kashubians. The real bloom of the town started in the 1st mid of the l9th century, when the bed of the river has been fastened, its mouth has been secured, a part of the dunes has been afforested and the boathouse (which in some time became a little port) has been opened. A superb position of this port till now is worthy of notice. That is an attractive part of the town and a beautiful route for a walk. As for the historical curiosities we recommend - the l7th century church (reconstructed in l9th century), the extends of wall of the St. Nicolas Church, which the other day stood in old Łeba, the architecture of the l9th century piscatorial hutches as well as the villa and boarding district constructed at the beginning of 20th century. During twenty years between two world wars Łeba was visited not only by many vacationers but also by artists. And among them by one of the most noted german expressionist Max Pechstein, whose work: the Intercessor Mother of Good can be admired in the parochial church. There are studs in Nowęcin the village near by where children and adults can learn horseriding. Followers of. silence and solitude will also find quiet, even mythical landscapes in Łeba. It is easy to go to Łeba. From Lębork it is only 30 kilometers, therę are very good connections with Słupsk (60 kilometers) and Gdańsk (110 kilometers). So it is worth planning the holiday in Łeba.
